ABOUT THE GAME

About the game

The Game of the Amazons was invented in 1988 by Walter Zamkauskas of Argentina and first published in Spanish in the Argentine puzzle magazine El Acertijo in December 1992.

Every move also fires an arrow that burns one square for good, so the board keeps shrinking until someone cannot move and loses; draws are impossible. Amazons is also played at the Computer Olympiad.

Rules

Amazons — How to play

Youzai Board Game Club — The server implementation governs play here; tournament and other site rules may differ.

01

Board and setup

A 10×10 board. Each side has four amazons: White on a4, d1, g1 and j4, Black on a7, d10, g10 and j7. White moves first.

02

Making a move

Each turn has two parts: move one of your amazons any number of squares in a straight line, orthogonally or diagonally, like a chess queen; then fire an arrow from its landing square, also like a queen. Neither amazons nor arrows may cross or land on an occupied square; the arrow may land on the square the amazon just left.

03

Winning and draws

If it is your turn and you cannot move, you lose: the last player able to move wins.

04

Rules on this site

An arrow burns its square for the rest of the game. A game lasts at most 92 turns and draws are impossible.

Helpful examples

  • An arrow may land on the square the amazon just left, or fly through it.
  • Once arrows split the board into separate regions, the game is mostly decided by who has more squares to move in each region.
  • A single trapped amazon does not lose the game; you lose only when none of your four can move.

Complete beginner guide

From setup to the end of the game

Read these steps in order to complete your first game. This guide combines public rules with this site’s server implementation; where versions differ, this site’s ruling applies.

01

Goal and setup

Each side has four amazons on the 10×10 board: White on a4, d1, g1 and j4, Black on a7, d10, g10 and j7. White moves first. Leave your opponent without a move to win.

02

Moving an amazon

Pick one of your amazons and move it any number of squares in a straight line, orthogonally or diagonally, like a chess queen. It may not cross or stop on a square holding an amazon or an arrow.

03

Shooting an arrow

After moving, that amazon must fire an arrow from its landing square, also like a queen and also without crossing anything. The arrow may land on the square it just left.

04

Burned squares

A square hit by an arrow is blocked for the rest of the game: nothing can enter it or pass over it, so the board keeps shrinking.

05

End of the game

When it is a player’s turn and none of their four amazons can move, that player loses. A game lasts at most 92 turns, and draws are impossible.

06

Beginner strategy

Bring your amazons to open central space early and keep them out of corners. Use arrows to box in your opponent while keeping large areas only you can reach.
