ABOUT THE GAME

About the game

Reversi’s history is linked to a nineteenth-century game of the same broad family; modern Othello, developed later in the twentieth century, popularised the flipping gameplay that people know today. The two are closely related, though their exact rules and naming did not develop identically.

The colours on the board can shift rapidly with each move, which makes the game both easy to pick up and a good way to experience the thrill of a sudden reversal.

Rules

Reversi — How to play

Youzai Board Game Club — The server implementation governs play here; tournament and other site rules may differ.

01

Board and setup

An 8×8 board starts with four alternating discs in the centre.

02

Making a move

Place a disc so it brackets at least one opposing disc along a row, column or diagonal; flip every bracketed line.

03

Winning and draws

When neither player can move or the board is full, the player with more discs wins.

04

Rules on this site

A player with no legal move passes automatically; a move that flips nothing is illegal.

Helpful examples

  • Between a newly placed disc and one of your existing discs, you may bracket opposing discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally; every qualifying direction is flipped at once.
  • You cannot play a square where no disc would flip. When a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes to the other player.

Complete beginner guide

From setup to the end of the game

Read these steps in order to complete your first game. This guide combines public rules with this site’s server implementation; where versions differ, this site’s ruling applies.

01

Setup and legal moves

Four discs start in the centre of the 8×8 board, colours alternating. A move must bracket at least one unbroken line of the opponent’s discs between the new disc and one of your own along some direction.

02

Flipping example

If a row reads “your disc — opponent — opponent — empty”, playing in that empty square flips both opposing discs to your colour. If one move brackets the opponent in several directions at once — horizontal, vertical or diagonal — every one of those lines gets flipped.

03

Passing and the end of the game

A player with no legal move passes automatically; the game continues as long as the other player can still move. Discs are only counted once neither player has a legal move or the board is full, and whoever has more discs wins.

04

Practical tips

You cannot play on a square where no disc would flip. Leading in disc count early does not guarantee a win — corner and edge squares usually shape which moves become available later.
