ABOUT THE GAME

About the game

Abalone is a modern abstract strategy game designed by Michel Lalet and Laurent Lévi in the 1980s. Its hexagonal board and two-coloured marbles give it a look and feel quite different from traditional grid-based games.

Pieces can move as a group and use their formation’s strength to push the opponent’s marbles; space control and edge defence are the game’s most recognisable themes as a result.

Abalone — How to play

Youzai Board Game Club — The server implementation governs play here; tournament and other site rules may differ.

01

Board and setup

A hexagonal board has 61 spaces and fourteen marbles per side.

02

Making a move

Move one to three adjacent marbles in a straight line by one space. An inline group may push a smaller enemy group.

03

Winning and draws

The first player to push six enemy marbles off wins.

04

Rules on this site

All destination spaces for a broadside move must be empty. You cannot move your own marbles off; 300 moves without a push-off draw.

Helpful examples

  • The selected group of your own marbles must be adjacent and in a straight line, one to three marbles, and the whole group moves one space per turn.
  • Every destination space must be empty for a sideways move. When pushing along the line’s own direction, you may push an enemy group shorter than your own.
  • An enemy marble pushed past the edge of the board is permanently out of the game; the first player to push out six enemy marbles wins.

Complete beginner guide

From setup to the end of the game

Read these steps in order to complete your first game. This guide combines public rules with this site’s server implementation; where versions differ, this site’s ruling applies.

01

Board and objective

The hexagonal board has 61 spaces, and each side has 14 marbles. Push a total of six enemy marbles off the board to win.

02

Moving as a group

Each turn, choose one to three of your own marbles that sit adjacent to each other in a straight line, and move the whole line one space in any of six directions. A line can move along its own axis to push forward, or shift sideways; every destination space for a sideways move must be empty.

03

Pushing example

If three of your marbles face two enemy marbles in a line, and there is an empty space or the board’s edge behind those enemy marbles, you can push them one space along the line. You cannot push if the enemy group is the same size or larger, or if your own marbles block the way.

04

End of game on this site

Marbles pushed off the board leave permanently; you cannot voluntarily move your own marbles off. This site declares a draw after 300 moves in a row with no marble pushed off.
