ABOUT THE GAME

About the game

Quoridor was designed by Mirko Marchesi and published by the French company Gigamic in 1997; the same year it received the Mensa Mind Game award.

The rules are tiny: each turn you either step your pawn or place a wall. Walls can lengthen your opponent’s route but must never cut it off completely. The original also has a four-player mode; this site plays the two-player game.

Rules

Quoridor — How to play

Youzai Board Game Club — The server implementation governs play here; tournament and other site rules may differ.

01

Board and setup

A 9×9 board of squares with grooves between them. White starts at the middle of the bottom edge and moves first; Black starts at the middle of the top edge. Each player has 10 walls.

02

Making a move

Each turn, either move your pawn one square up, down, left or right (never through a wall), or place a two-square wall in a groove. When the pawns are adjacent you may jump over; if a wall or the edge is behind the other pawn, jump diagonally to its side instead.

03

Winning and draws

The first pawn to reach any square on the opposite edge wins.

04

Rules on this site

Walls may not overlap or cross, and after placing one both players must still have a route to their goal. This site declares a draw after 200 plies.

Helpful examples

  • Walls can only lengthen a route, never close it; picture the detour before you build.
  • Once your walls are gone you can only walk, so don’t spend them all in the opening.
  • When the pawns meet face to face, whoever jumps first usually gains a whole step.

Complete beginner guide

From setup to the end of the game

Read these steps in order to complete your first game. This guide combines public rules with this site’s server implementation; where versions differ, this site’s ruling applies.

01

Goal and setup

On the 9×9 board White starts at the middle of the bottom edge and Black at the middle of the top edge. Each has 10 walls and White moves first. Reach any square on the opposite edge to win.

02

Moving the pawn

A pawn moves one square up, down, left or right; never diagonally and never through a wall.

03

Jumping

When the pawns are adjacent you may jump straight over the other pawn. If a wall or the board edge is behind it, jump to its left or right side instead, again not through a wall.

04

Placing walls

Instead of moving you may place a wall two squares long in a groove between squares, horizontal or vertical. Each player has 10; once they are gone you can only move.

05

Wall restrictions

Walls may not overlap or cross an existing wall, and after placing one both players must still have a route to their goal. This site declares a draw after 200 plies.

06

Beginner strategy

It is a race of path lengths: every wall should cost your opponent more steps than it costs you. Walls are strongest when saved for when your opponent nears the finish.
